Before the Export-It application can be installed in a “networked” topology the physical location for the common Database "server" Drive must be decided. Then a "share" must be published which the other "platforms" [computers] can "map" to a drive letter. The database "share" has these characteristics:
The database "share" may be published by a machine running a Windows® Server edition (e.g. a domain server) or by any machine in a "peer" workgroup or a domain. Or any Novell, Banyan, Linux, Unix or other system that supports "Windows Printer and File Sharing" [SMB] protocols.
"Full" access permissions must be granted to all Export-It users (and all "platforms" [computers] where the application is installed, if restricted computer access policies are employed).
Name for the "share" should not contain embedded spaces or special characters. Syscob recommends the name conform to Microsoft "8.3 name" convention (i.e. no more than 11 non-blank alphanumeric characters).
Until this "share" is published, and mapped to a drive letter, it is not possible to run the initial "complete" install that creates the empty database for the application. And until the database exists and is mapped by a computer it is not possible to run the "part" install that sets up a machine to run the application.
Of course, for a “stand-alone” topology on a single PC (where no other machine needs to access the database) there is no need to publish a "share" for other computers to access.
